“I recently got into a conversation with an American. He told me about the struggle he went through to escape from the ghetto and become the man he is today. What stayed with me were his words, “I don’t mind the struggle, I’m built for it!”
Alida Dors
We’re all different. And that’s the way it’s supposed to be. It’s a fact – but how do we deal with this? As human beings, we all end up stigmatising others. Built for it is a poignant appeal for empathy. Seven dancers try to free themselves from persistent stigmas and prejudices. Is it possible for the individual to break free of these? To what extent do we determine who we are or who we want to be?
This production depicts the struggle for empowerment of a stigmatised individual and group. It takes the form of the deconstruction of a stereotype. A personal search for autonomy and an individual voice, shaped by Alida Dors’ choreography and sharp spoken word by wordsmith and rapper Typhoon. Typhoon’s work, like Alida’s, is characterised by rhythmic patterns. Together, these two disciplines form the motor behind the dance. This unique cooperation was informed by the makers’ shared love of hip-hop.
‘Built for it shows that hip-hop can be more than a competition for virtuoso performance pieces and skills.’
