True Colors in premiere

After months of rehearsals in Het Klooster in Woerden, in Tanzhaus NRW in Düsseldorf and in the Rotterdamse Schouwburg, we’re nearly there: the première of True Colors. Our latest production in cooperation with musical theatre company Silbersee is about the search for the real person behind our online identities. About how we present ourselves as better than we really are. About the struggle to maintain images that conceal. In True Colors, we see what we prefer to keep hidden... there will be a try-out for True Colors on Friday, 27 January, ahead of the première on Saturday, 28 January 2017 in Theater Bellevue in Amsterdam. The production will then tour more than 30 cities in both the Netherlands and Germany.

Built for it: the final

I know we’ve said it several times before: but this will be the very last production of Built for it! Great new opportunities just kept popping up... the highlight of which was the Gallery of Honour in the Rijksmuseum, where we danced between the Rembrandts and Vermeers. And not so long ago, following the speech by Minister Bussemaker at the annual Cultuur in Beeld (Culture in the Picture) conference in Rotterdam (watch the video!). Although we have become wary of saying so, we think this month really will be the very last time Built for it will be danced. On Friday, 20 January, in De Meervaart, during the Theaterweekend (Theatre Weekend). We look forward to seeing you there!

Audition dancer [F) Thursday 20 October between 11:00 and 16:00

For her new performance choreographer Alida Dors from dance company BackBone is looking for a strong and physical dancer (Female) with an open character. Experience in different dance styles is requested.

In her work, Alida Dors mixes elements of hip-hop with a contemporary dance language. Whereas too often emotion and show are the sole creative drive behind hip-hop, Alida has sought from the very beginning to find a different articulacy. She looks further than just technique, steps and tricks; she extends the dramatic arc and reduces the element of spectacle to the minimum in order to really approach the essence. BackBone’s dancers are often ‘bi-lingual’ performers, having mastered both a hip-hop dance style and another dance style. They are also often strong personalities. Convinced that dance can create change and promote social cohesion, BackBone uses dance to raise social issues and bring different groups together, allowing the urban themes that underlie our society to resonate. The contribution of the dancers to the artistic process is essential.

BackBone celebrates structural support

The big smile on our face will remain for a while! This week we heard the good news that we will receive structural support from both the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK) and the Dutch Performing Arts Fund (FPK). Both for the next four years! The AFK praised the ‘intelligent connection between hip-hop and other genres’ and the ‘clear original own signature’. The FPK praised the interesting social issues of our performances and the high quality of our dancers. We are proud and honoured that both funds have expressed their confidence in us. Thanks AFK, FPK, everyone who supported us, and also you, our audience! The next few years we're going to rock!
